Diabetes

Diabetes has become a pandemic, a devastating disease of unprecedented proportions and this is the situation:

• An estimated 371 million people – or 8.3% of the global adult population – currently live with diabetes, with millions more at risk of developing the disease. However, half of the people with diabetes do not know it1.

• By 2030 this number is expected to grow to 552 million, or 9.3% of adults, equating to roughly three new cases of diabetes every 10 seconds1.

• In 2011, at least USD $465 billion in global healthcare costs were attributed to diabetes, or 11% of total healthcare costs in adults 20-79 years of age1.

• The projected cost of diabetes in the U.S. alone is USD $3.4 trillion over the ten years through 2020, according to the United Health Group.
